Wake Me Up Before You Go Go

My internal clock is a little off right now ...

Every day I wake up at 5:30. Whether or not I actually get out of bed at that time depends on the day, but I wake up at that time regardless. Yesterday I got up at 5:30 and went to the gym. This morning I planned to do the same. And in all fairness to my "alarm clock" (phone), I think I probably did wake up at 5:30, but I turned my alarm off (meaning I opened and shut my cell phone) and went back to sleep ... for another 3-1/2 hours. And, to my knowledge, I didn't wake up once before then. When I finally did wake up, it was 9:05. Problematic since my work day starts at 8:30. Not sure what happened to make me oversleep that much, but luckily I didn't have any meetings this morning.

When I really need to make sure that I'm up for something, like a client meeting or an early flight, I sleep on my couch. My thought process for that is that I'm such a deep sleeper but a couch is not nearly as comfortable as a bed, so surely I'll wake myself up multiple times by tossing and turning. But I really can sleep anywhere, so it's still a dangerous game.

And all day I thought about how being sleepy never really works as a valid excuse. I mean it does to an extent, because it's true, but it sounds ridiculous. I guess I could have called in and said my car broke down or I was sick, but all I could really say was that I overslept (by 3-1/2 hours) and just must have been really, really, really tired. It would have been awesome if the response to that was "are you still sleepy? If so, just go back to bed! Come in when you're ready." Maybe tomorrow.
